For Such Little Pay

Another housekeeper quit today

You can’t get a slave for such little pay

Perhaps you could find a little tart

One who doesn’t pretend to be smart

She’ll clean your house and bake the bread

Keep you warm and keep you fed

And she won’t ask for anything

Nay, even ask you for a ring

She’ll work her fingers to the bone

And though you leave her all alone

When you come home the fire is burning

And for you her heart is yearning

Devotion is her middle name

Every day, the same, the same

Doesn’t matter what the pay

She’ll be there for you everyday

Would not your heart be full of gladness?

Would there be any room for sadness?

And never would you have to say –

Another housekeeper quit today.
